Stump Grinding by Neighborhood in Oak Hill, TN

Eight square miles, about 1,800 houses, and two completely different kinds of ground under them. Find your street below and see what we actually run into there.

HomeNeighborhoods

One city, two sets of soil

The west half of Oak Hill sits on the Overton Hills, an outlier of the Western Highland Rim with ridges above 1,200 feet and acidic, cherty soils capped by Fort Payne rock. The east half, down toward Franklin Pike and I-65, is ordinary Central Basin limestone. A mile apart, two entirely different jobs.

On the west side - Otter Creek, Villa Crest, the Inns of Granny White ridge - a grinder meets chert cobbles mixed through deep colluvium, which slows the feed, chips teeth and turns a routine stump into a longer visit. Slopes at fifteen percent and steeper bring the city's own stability rules into it as well. Over on the east side, in Crieve Hall, Brentview Hills, Oak Hill Estates and around Overton Lea, the ground is flatter and the constraint is what is buried in it rather than what the wheel hits.

We price accordingly rather than applying one rate across the city. If you are comparing a quote from us against one from somebody who did not ask which side of town you are on, that difference is why.

How the week actually runs across town

The crew works out from the Franklin Pike side, so the east of the city is the shortest run - four minutes to Forest Acres Drive in Oak Hill Estates, five to Overton Lea Road, six or seven across the Crieve Hall grid. Those are the easiest slots to fill at short notice.

West and north takes longer, not because of distance but because of the roads. Otter Creek Road does not run through - the stretch inside the state natural area has been closed to cars for decades - so an address on the far side has to be approached from the correct end or a truck and trailer ends up reversing out of a narrow lane. Tyne Boulevard has no shoulder to stage on. The hillside drives off Granny White Pike need the machine walked down. All of that is planned before the day, which is why we ask about your drive and your gate on the first call.

Standard grinding books three to five working days out. A tree leaning on a roof, a fence or a line gets looked at same or next day, wherever it is in the city.

There is no tree yard inside the city limits

Oak Hill's charter bars commercial establishments outright. No shopping centre, no gas station, no equipment yard, no place inside eight square miles to tip a load of grindings or top up a fuel can. Everything we need for the day comes in on the truck and everything that leaves goes out the same way.

That also shapes what happens to your spoil. A ground stump produces two to three times the volume people expect, and the city's monthly leaf and limb collection is set up for branches rather than for a heap of soil-mixed grindings. So there are really three options and we quote whichever you want: backfill the hole and let it settle, spread the excess thin into beds on your own property, or have it leave on our trailer with topsoil brought back in its place.

The other habit worth knowing is that Oak Hill's own services collect from the back door rather than the curb. Homeowners here expect crews to work at the back of the house and leave no sign of it at the front, and that is how we approach a job as well.

Questions about where we work in Oak Hill

Do you cover all of 37220, or just inside the city limits?

All of it, plus the parts of Oak Hill that fall in 37204 and 37215. The zip does not line up with the city boundary - Crieve Hall, Brentview Hills and Aberdeen Woods sit in 37220 but outside Oak Hill's incorporated limits, and Lealand Lane runs across two zips. None of that changes whether we come. Give us the street name and we will tell you the drive time.

Which is the cheapest neighborhood to have a stump ground in?

Cost tracks access and soil rather than address. The flat, open lots in Brentview Hills and the Crieve Hall grid are the quickest to set up on, so the same-sized stump there costs less than one on a terraced hillside off Villa Crest or six hundred feet down a private drive off Tyne. Species matters as much as location - a white oak is slower than a silver maple twice its age.

Do I need a permit before any of this?

Not for grinding a stump that is already there. Removing a living tree inside Oak Hill is a different matter: the city runs its own standards, adopted in 2024, requiring an inventory of trunks three inches and up, a two hundred dollar permit and sign-off from the City Manager and Codes Compliance Officer, with replacement planting required. Dead, storm-thrown and certified diseased trees are exempt.

How fast can somebody get out here?

A photo texted or emailed on a weekday usually comes back with a firm price within a couple of hours. Ordinary grinding goes on the calendar three to five working days out, sooner on the east side of the city where the run is shortest. Anything unstable or resting on a structure moves to the front of the queue and gets seen the same day or the next morning.
